South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) released its long-awaited update to the country’s Industrial Development Strategy (IDS) on 8 June. The document’s deliberate goal is the reindustrialising of the South African economy. But it has elicited criticism from almost all quarters and has generated very little enthusiasm.
